Types of Sedation Dentistry

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is the most common technique used for sedation. Laughing gas is designed to help lessen the anxieties and fear that you may have but is usually used for smaller or shorter procedures. The gas is administered through a mask placed over your mouth and nose, which is attached to the tank containing the mixture.
Nitrous oxide allows you to remain awake and alert during the procedure but still very relaxed. This sedation technique leaves the system quickly allowing you to drive home after the completion of the procedure.
Oral Conscious sedation is administered in either pill or liquid form and is taken before your scheduled appointment. The prescription strength medication given is designed to help you relax and may make you feel sleepy before, during, and after your visit. This method of sedation can provide us with enough time to complete your whole treatment in one visit. Since you might experience some side effects such as sleepiness, grogginess, and a relaxed mood it is necessary for a friend or family member to drive you home.
Our team provides IV sedation, which is a form of moderate sedation that allows patients to feel as though they slept through the entire procedure. Although stronger than oral or nitrous sedation, you will still be capable of responding when spoken to or asked questions, but patients typically have no memory of the procedure at all. Used primarily for extended dental procedures, this is a safe sedation option that requires little downtime. This type of sedation has a few extra requirements regarding food intake and contraindicated medications, which we will be sure to instruct you on before treatment. You will also need someone to accompany you to and from your appointment and stay with you until you are completely free of the effects.
